The 2018 Chambertin Clos-de-Bèze Grand Cru has a very well-defined bouquet of red berry fruit laced with undergrowth, rose petals, incense and hints of white pepper; so much vigor here. The palate is medium-bodied with filigreed tannins, wonderful tension and great length on the finish. This is a class apart, an intellectual and downright delicious Chambertin that will surely gain even more sophistication during its second winter in barrel. Awesome. (NM)

Domaine Armand Rousseau is without a doubt one of the most famous and greatest domaines in Burgundy, producing impeccable quality wines from vintage to vintage, renowned for their great elegance and stamina. Their wines are some of the most collectible in the world and the domaine consistently helps to place Burgundy at the top of the wine world. Usually mentioned in the same breadth as Domaine de la Romanée-Conti and Domaine Leroy, Armand Rousseau has established itself as a legendary producer owning mostly Grand Cru vineyards in Gevrey Chambertin.

Clive Coates MW - “There are few finer domaines in the Côte D’Or than that of Armand Rousseau.  With land in Le Chambertin itself, Chambertin Clos de Bèze, Mazis, Charmes, Clos Saint Jacques, Cazetiers and Lavaux-Saint-Jacques, all in Gevrey, as well as in Clos de la Roche in Morey-Saint-Denis, this 14 hectare estate can boast some of the finest sites in the northern part of the Côte.  The vines are old, the rendement low, and the wine-making perfectionistic – and the wines themselves are stunning.”

The 2018 Chambertin-Clos de Bèze Grand Cru was more extroverted during my visit to the Rousseau cellars this year, exhibiting a rich and complex bouquet of smoked meats, ripe cherries, cassis, woodsmoke, nori, blackberries and dark chocolate, framed by a lavish application of cedary new oak. It's full-bodied, fleshy and enveloping, with a ripe core of fruit, powdery tannins and a long, palate-staining finish. The Clos de Bèze is more immediate and dramatic than this year's Chambertin. Generally poured last in any tasting at the domaine, as it's the most powerful wine in the line up, this Clos de Bèze hails from a 1.5ha parcel, which means that's in shorter supply than the Rousseau Chambertin. Plush, textured and grippy, this has understated richness, sinewy tannins, well-integrated 100% new wood and a chalky, refreshing finish. Drinking Window 2024 - 2035. (TA)

The 2018 Clos de Bèze is more closed and powerful than the Chambertin this year (or at least at this stage of its development), but every bit as long and promising. The bouquet shows stunning depth in its youthful blend of black cherries, red and black plums, dark chocolate, grilled meats, a superb base of soil and a fine foundation of smoky new oak. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied and nicely structured, with a sappy core of fruit, fine soil signature, ripe, perfectly integrated tannins and a long, adolescently complex and very promising finish. Fine juice in the making. (Drink between 2035-2085)
