Average age of vines is over 60 years. Bright crimson. Extremely intense on the nose, and vibrant too. Juicy and relaxed and very well balanced. Less tense on the palate than the Clos St-Denis. Pure pleasure with the Morey lift. Very polished with masses of flavour packed in here. Very clean and refreshing – and this goes on and on.

Domaine Ponsot is one of the, if not the, defining domaine of the village of Morey-St-Denis, and the largest landowner in the hallowed terroir of Clos de la Roche Grand Cru, with over three hectares.

The estate has been in the Ponsot family since 1872,when William Ponsot settled in Morey-St-Denis and bought up land including their only Chardonnay parcel, the premier cru Clos des Monts Luisants. Laurent Ponsot brought the estate to fame, with his flare for producing distinctive wines that broke the mould. His departure in 2017 saw the domaine transferred to the safe hands of his sister, Rose-Marie, and her nephew William and the appointment of régisseur, Alexandre Abel. Together they have ensured the domaine’s signature style of late picking their Pinot Noir destemming, and exclusion of new oak during élevage continued seamlessly.

These are intense, concentrated, and fabulously long-lived wines, keenly sought-out by the domaine’s many loyal followers.

The 2014 Clos de la Roche Vieilles Vignes Grand Cru has a corker of a nose: here, a rush of raspberry and Morello cherry infused with limestone and flint aromas. The palate is stately, regal, with filigree tannin and a beguiling sense of symmetry. It bides its time in the mouth before fanning out with effortless ease. This is a fabulous, vivacious Clos de la Roche.
